Debt-to-assets<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Debt-to-assets compares total debt with total assets:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><code>Debt-to-assets = Total debt \/ Total assets<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ratio avoids one weakness of debt-to-equity: shareholders&#8217; equity can become very small or negative, making the equity-based denominator difficult or impossible to interpret. Total assets are usually more stable, so debt-to-assets can provide a cleaner view of how much of the recorded asset base is financed by debt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A rising ratio may indicate that debt is growing faster than assets or that the asset base is shrinking. A falling ratio may reflect debt repayment, asset growth, or both. Those paths are not economically equivalent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Asset quality matters too. Two companies can report the same debt-to-assets ratio while one holds liquid, productive assets and the other holds assets that are difficult to sell or vulnerable to impairment. Net debt relative to EBITDA<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Net debt subtracts cash and equivalents from total debt. Dividing that amount by EBITDA creates a rough comparison between cash-adjusted financial load and current operating earnings capacity:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><code>Net debt \/ EBITDA = (Total debt - Cash and equivalents) \/ EBITDA<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This ratio can make debt more interpretable because <code>$10 billion<\/code> of debt means something different for a company with <code>$1 billion<\/code> of EBITDA than for one with <code>$8 billion<\/code>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Its apparent simplicity hides several conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cash may be restricted or needed for operations. EBITDA excludes capital spending, working-capital needs, taxes, and interest. A capital-intensive business may show acceptable EBITDA while consuming much of that earning capacity through required investment. A cyclical company&#8217;s recent EBITDA may be unusually high near a peak or unusually low near a trough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ratio also becomes Not Meaningful when EBITDA is zero or negative. A mathematically produced negative multiple in that situation is not evidence of low leverage. It is a denominator failure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Concern rises when net debt increases, EBITDA weakens, and the business lacks a credible route to stronger cash support. The pattern carries more information than a high multiple viewed alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Debt maturity and direction<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Debt level and debt timing are separate signals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A company can report stable total debt while a large amount moves from long-term debt into the current portion due within twelve months. The total has barely changed, but the liquidity burden has.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A debt review therefore needs:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>total debt;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>current or short-term debt;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>long-term debt;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the maturity schedule;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>recent issuance and repayment;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>cash and available borrowing capacity; and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a multi-year debt trend.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Boeing fiscal 2025 filing provides a useful example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Analysis snapshot:<\/strong> July 28, 2026<br><strong>Current period:<\/strong> Year ended December 31, 2025<br><strong>Comparison period:<\/strong> Year ended December 31, 2024<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Boeing&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sec.gov\/Archives\/edgar\/data\/12927\/000162828026004357\/ba-20251231.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fiscal 2025 Form 10-K<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>long-term debt declined from <code>$52.586 billion<\/code> to <code>$45.637 billion<\/code>;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>total assets increased from <code>$156.363 billion<\/code> to <code>$168.235 billion<\/code>;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>long-term debt divided by assets therefore improved from approximately <code>33.63%<\/code> to <code>27.13%<\/code>;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>short-term debt and the current portion of long-term debt rose from <code>$1.278 billion<\/code> to <code>$8.461 billion<\/code>; and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>total debt increased slightly from <code>$53.864 billion<\/code> to <code>$54.098 billion<\/code>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The declining long-term-debt ratio is mechanically favorable. It does not support the broader statement that Boeing reduced its total debt burden. Debt direction must include classification and maturity, not only a headline ratio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Question 2: How much near-term room does the company have?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Current ratio<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The current ratio compares current assets with current liabilities:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><code>Current ratio = Current assets \/ Current liabilities<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is a short-term liquidity snapshot. A ratio above <code>1.0<\/code> means reported current assets exceed reported current liabilities. A ratio below <code>1.0<\/code> means the reverse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That boundary is descriptive, not a universal distress threshold. Retailers can operate with supplier terms and inventory cycles that differ sharply from software companies. A company with recurring cash receipts may require less balance-sheet liquidity than a cyclical company with uncertain collections. Current assets may also include inventory or receivables that cannot be converted into cash at their recorded value under stress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Direction still matters. A current ratio falling for several years can indicate tightening flexibility even if the latest value remains above <code>1.0<\/code>. An improving ratio can indicate less pressure, but the magnitude, composition, and cause deserve inspection. Yet current liabilities exceeded current assets in both years. The conclusion is not that Target passed or failed financial health. The conclusion is that short-term liquidity improved slightly from its prior level while remaining below <code>1.0<\/code>, requiring retail-specific working-capital and cash-generation context.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"\/blog\/piotroski-f-score\">Piotroski F-Score guide<\/a> therefore keeps the underlying ratio beside the binary pass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Quick ratio<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The quick ratio removes inventory and other less-liquid current assets from the coverage test:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><code>Quick ratio = (Cash + Short-term investments + Receivables) \/ Current liabilities<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It asks how much near-term coverage remains without assuming that inventory can be sold promptly and near its recorded amount.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The difference between the current ratio and quick ratio can be revealing. A wide gap suggests that inventory carries much of the reported current-asset support. That may be normal for a retailer or distributor, but it raises questions about inventory quality, turnover, markdown risk, and seasonality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A quick ratio can also overstate flexibility. Receivables may be concentrated, disputed, slow-moving, or exposed to customers under pressure. Cash may be restricted or required to operate the business. The formula is stricter than the current ratio, not complete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Read both liquidity measures across comparable periods. If the current ratio is stable while the quick ratio deteriorates, the composition of current assets may be becoming less liquid. If both decline while current debt rises, the signals begin to reinforce one another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Question 3: What supports the company&#8217;s obligations?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6. Interest coverage<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Interest coverage connects operating earnings with financing cost:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><code>Interest coverage = EBIT \/ Interest expense<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ratio asks how many times current operating profit covers current interest expense. Falling coverage can indicate that earnings are weakening, interest costs are rising, or both.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is more informative than debt level alone. A company can carry substantial debt while stable operating earnings support the interest burden. Another can carry less debt but face weak coverage because its earnings are volatile or financing cost has increased.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The denominator must be meaningful. If reported interest expense is zero or negative, the standard ratio should not be forced. Cyclical earnings also require several periods of context. One strong year can make coverage look more comfortable than a normalized cycle would support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Coverage is an earnings-based signal, not proof that cash will be available when interest is due. The next two signals test that missing cash dimension.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7. Operating cash flow relative to debt<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Operating cash flow to debt compares cash generated by operations with total debt:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><code>Operating cash flow \/ debt = Cash from operations \/ Total debt<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This signal moves the analysis from accounting profit toward cash support. It asks whether the core business is producing cash on a scale that appears meaningful relative to its obligations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A declining ratio may result from weaker operating cash flow, rising debt, or both. The cause matters. Working-capital movements can push cash flow sharply in either direction during one year. A company may collect receivables, reduce inventory, or delay payments in ways that temporarily strengthen operating cash flow without improving the underlying economics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Use a multi-year series and reconcile large changes. Compare operating cash flow with net income, revenue, working capital, and debt issuance. The signal becomes more concerning when operating cash flow weakens while debt and interest costs rise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">8. Free cash flow relative to debt<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Free cash flow deducts capital expenditure from operating cash flow:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><code>Free cash flow = Operating cash flow - Capital expenditure<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><code>Free cash flow \/ debt = Free cash flow \/ Total debt<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This creates a stricter view of potential debt-reduction capacity after the business funds investment in property, equipment, and other capital needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Free cash flow is not automatically superior to operating cash flow in every period. A company building a new facility or expanding a productive network may report weak free cash flow because investment is temporarily high. Another may produce strong free cash flow by cutting maintenance spending that cannot remain low indefinitely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Interpreting the ratio requires separating:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>maintenance capital spending from growth investment;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>recurring cash generation from working-capital timing;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>discretionary projects from required spending; and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>one-year pressure from a persistent inability to self-fund.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Operating cash flow and free cash flow should be read together. The gap between them is often where the capital intensity of the business becomes visible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Question 4: Is operating strength moving in the wrong direction?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">9. Profitability direction<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Financial pressure is easier to absorb when the operating business remains profitable and productive. That makes profitability direction a financial-health signal even though profitability also belongs to business-quality analysis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Return on assets is one possible lens:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><code>Return on assets = Net income \/ Total assets<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Operating margin, gross margin, and asset turnover can add different context. No universal &#8220;good&#8221; percentage settles the question. The useful signal is whether returns and operating economics are weakening while the company still has fixed obligations to service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A falling return on assets can come from lower income, a larger asset base, or both. Acquisitions can increase assets before expected earnings arrive. Impairments can shrink the denominator. One-time gains can raise net income without improving recurring operations. Margin changes can reflect pricing, product mix, input costs, or accounting classifications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Profitability direction becomes more informative when connected back to cash support. Weakening margins, falling returns, and operating cash flow below reported earnings form a different pattern from a temporary margin decline during a well-funded investment cycle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Piotroski model formalizes several annual direction checks, while the <a href=\"\/blog\/altman-z-score\">Altman Z-Score<\/a> uses selected profitability and efficiency inputs inside a structural distress formula. Neither removes the need to reopen the underlying numbers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Question 5: How has the stock behaved under market pressure?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">10.
